BitMEX has announced that Russians will no longer have access to their services within the European Union after July 11, 2022. This is in a bid to increase their compliance with other European sanctions levied against Russian residents and citizens.
Trade With Mac had learned that BitMEX is planning to enforce significant restrictions for Russians via email on Monday, July 4, 2022, when they notified their potentially affected users about the upcoming changes.
This update translates that affected users will no longer be able to access BitMEX services nor log into their BitMEX accounts from the European Union. However, this restriction doesn’t affect Russians with dual citizenship or who live outside Russia.
The email read in part, “If you are a resident in the EU or Switzerland or a dual citizen of the EU or Switzerland and reside outside Russia, you may submit additional information to apply for an exemption and continue to access our Services from the EU.”
BitMEX’s restriction for Russians is coming after recent similar actions by other major cryptocurrency exchanges, including that of Binance. All of these actions are primarily a result of Russia’s president, Vladimir Putin, announcing a “Special military operation” against Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
