Binance’s emergency insurance fund is largely comprised of a cryptocurrency tied to the company itself, according to on-chain data.
The two addresses related to the fund reflect that its BNB tokens account for 44% of its reserves.
As on-chain analyst Willy Woo shared on Twitter, the Secure Asset Fund for Users (SAFU) includes $367 million worth of BNB. The rest consists of Binance’s dollar-pegged stablecoin BUSD ($300 million) and Bitcoin, the largest cryptocurrency by market cap ($270 million). These balances are verifiable through public blockchain data at Binance’s Bitcoin and BSC addresses.
The exchange soon plans to implement a proof of reserves system verifying its total exchange assets as well. Nevertheless, Woo found Binance’s reliance on BNB within the reserve to be concerning.
He stated that while he commends Binance for possessing such a fund, there’s no sense placing incidence-correlated BNB in there.
In 2018, The SAFU was created to protect Binance users’ funds during a catastrophe. After slowly being funded through trading fees collected by Binance, it officially opened in January 2022 at a valuation of $1 billion. The Crypto market fall has since knocked its spot market valuation to roughly $837 million.
These funds still roughly match the $68 million in Binance’s proof of reserves today, combined with the estimated $800 million within Binance Custody. But further volatility, particularly in BNB, could take SAFU’s valuation far lower when it matters most – especially since its success is directly related to Binance’s stability and success.
BNB gives holders trading fee discounts when exchanging crypto at Binance. It is similar to FTX’s FTT token in this manner but with a much larger market cap.
As revealed in its leaked balance sheet earlier this month, FTT once comprised a significant chunk of Alameda Research’s total assets. The trading firm went down with its sibling exchange on November 11th after Binance CEO Chanpeng Zhao threatened to dump the token on the market. Its price has since collapsed from above $22 on November 6th to below $2 at writing time.
The Solana Foundation exposed on Monday that it possessed over $70 million in FTT exposure earlier this month. Its remaining tokens, which are now worth far less, are still trapped inside FTX.

I have a problem with this “NAT is not a firewall” stuff I agree that it isn’t one, but the old way isn’t stupidThe alternative is like saying if your locks work properly, every room in your house should have a door to the outside But there’s no need to create a door to get into your bedroom closet from outdoors, no matter how good the lock is Make them go to the front door and only forward those things that you actually want to exposeYou may already do something similar in layer 2, isolating wireless clients from each other or separating iot devices from trusted devices by not defining a way to go from that port or vlan to the other port or vlan, for exampleAlong similar lines, having a separate network and then natting invalidates the idea of (some) communication by requiring you to define how it may occur before it can exist, rather than having it fully ready but just turned off It may often end up about the same; if your firewall gets compromised you’re going to have a bad time no matter what, but still Plus, for all that having very limited public addresses can be annoying, I have some reading to do before I can understand whether the privacy measures being used for ipv6 might not still reveal too much about the origin of traffic by device in the same building as compared to funneling everything out of the same address like ipv4
